FC4 or Mandriva install failure on a Compaq DL385 with Smartarray 6i

I am having trouble installing either FC4 or Mandriva 2006 on a Compaq (HP) DL385 equipped with dual opteron cpus and smartarray 6i array controller. The install proceeds perfectly in graphical mode, and all my devices are properly recognized when I peek into the system using the console.

However, when I try to boot the newly installed system, I get an immediate crash (kernel panic), identical with FC4 or Mandriva, both with lilo and grub. The grub and lilo conf files are ok and point to the right directories (/dev/cciss/c0d0p*). If I boot using a rescue CD and mount the partitions, I can see that all is there.

Does anybody have a clue on what my problem could be ? Missing option to the kernel ? Thanks all.

Yes, I used smartstart to configure my array. Nothing much else to be done there, unless I missed something.

Thanks for you desire to help.

However, I really do not see how this procedure relate to my problem. Mine is that, after install, the server will not boot at all and crashes with a kernel panic. The DL385 is equipped with a smartarray 6i controller, and features no SATA bus.

Regards.
