FC2 Radeon 9700 problem

Hi!,

I have need to run FC2 for a specific application, and I got past the P4P800 kernel problem and installed FC2 and updated the kernel so it will boot with my mobo. While I was installing FC2 I noticed that it detected my monitor properly (Sony CPD-G500), but it detected my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro video card as a Matrox G550.

When I tried to boot into Xwindows, it failed to load due to this problem.

I searched around in here before asking but found nothing that could help me. Shell is fine, and can login np. How do I correct this problem?

My skill level? at the low end of experience...lol

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thank you!!

So basically your forced into a shell because X can't identify your card. Can I ever relate... The problem is that it's using the incorrect driver. Open your xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and look in the section titled "Device". Then look where it says driver, and change whatever it says in quotes next to driver to radeon. If that doesn't work or you need more help, please post the entire contents of the xorg.conf file. (I had the same situation, and in order to modify the file I had to use a livecd of PCLinuxOS).

I had a feeling it would be something like that. Go figure. RedHat9 installs perfectly and FC2 chokes. Improvement? lol

Thank you for your response. I had a feeling I was not alone in this as the Radeon was a popular card (still works for me!). If I may ask, with what can I open it and how do I launch it from the shell? I am pretty intuitive with hardware, so if there are things to be set I should be able to figure it out once I can get to it (famous last words...lol)

Thanks for your assistance! I really appreciate it!!!

To edit the file open a root terminal and do:

gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

or you can use any text editor of your choice instead of gedit. Then you will be able to edit the file changing the driver to "radeon".
