FC1 and Epson 740 printer...sort of working
Hi all,

Did a preliminary search and couldn't find anyone with my exact problem.

I am running K12LTSP (essentially Fedora Core 1 and LTSP with educational programs on it) at my library. I have everything working great -- except printing. The server is a p4 2.6 ghz, 1 gig of RAM, custom job. It's running two thin clients at present.

I have an Epson Color 740i hooked up to the parallel port (not USB) on the server. When I started the server the first time, it recognized my printer immediately. Great. I go to print, though, and the print monitor icon comes up, I can see my job in the queue, and the printer starts whirring. It spits out an endless stream of blank papers. The print heads move like it is printing something, but nothing comes out.

I took a look at the properties, and they seem to have the right drivers installed (at least, FC said they were the recommend drivers.)

Any insights would be GREATLY appreciated. I'd like to get the thing up and printing before the school year really gets underway.

if this is your printer, you should be using the gimp-print driver.

hope that helps.
good luck.

I'll give it a try. I was using gimp-print-ijsomethingorother, IIRC. I think there was a plain old "gimp print" option, as well. I'll give it a try Tuesday or Wednesday and see what happens. Thanks!

Okay, it's working, but the print quality is pretty bad. I've put it on the highest settings, and it's printing out readable, but not too great looking. I'd like to get it a little better if I can....

I'd also like to not have it on the highest settings, just to save a little ink.

Ed: The gimp-print "stp" driver also supports this printer with the best color results.
from the link above.
good luck.
