[SOLVED] Faster 3d on a 82865G, can it be done?

Greetings programs!

Okay, so, I run Arch (as some know by now...) and lshw about the graphics side of my box said this:

...so, can this thing go a little faster at 3D, or at least "think" it? Anything (non drastic) that can be done? Tweaked? Setting the DRI?

I'm in the audio and users groups, not that this matters (at least, I dunnow).

It's just that I'd like to smoothen up my RuneScape experience

The 865G is a really crappy device, the only thing to get that faster is to disable it and use a better graphics card. Even the slowest available should be much better than that chip.

Hmmmm, the itch behind my ears whispered something like that. Snag, I got an ultra-slimline (basically a laptop-in-a-desktop) with only one PCI slot. Means I'll need to get me a card that fits in that slot and accelerates.

You might get some improvement if you can increase the size of the shared video RAM. The setting for that will be in your BIOS.

If you do go looking for a PCI card, you want an nVidia or ATI/AMD card. The others arent worth trying. the most common PCI nVidia cards, in order form 'bad' to 'good' is-

MX440, MX4000. Same basic chip, uses 96.XX drivers.
FX5200. Uses 173.XX drivers.
6200. Uses nVidia-current, as do all the following cards.
8400GS.
9400/9500GT.

ATI/AMD PCI cards arent as common. The only cards I've seen much are-

7000- Ancient. Older then the MX440 in some ways. Open source drivers only.
9XXX (mostly 9250). Fairly old, about as old as the nVidia FX cards. Open source drivers only.
3450/5450- Fairly new. Open source and closed ATI/AMD drivers work.

Anything listed here should be much better than i865 video, even the very old ATI/AMD cards with open source drivers only. Probably the pick of them would be the 9400/9500GT or the 3450/5450. I'd probably take the 5450 is they all were the same price, but thats not the way it works. BTW, costs for PCI cards are really variable. What one store will be selling for $100+, another might have for $45.
