failed command: read dma (status: { DRDY DF ERR })

Hi all,

I'm getting these errors on one of my machines:
Code:
[8423902.269740] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0
[8423902.269776] ata2.00: irq_stat 0x40000001
[8423902.269805] ata2.00: failed command: READ DMA
[8423902.269839] ata2.00: cmd c8/00:08:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 4096 in
[8423902.269840]          res 61/04:08:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/e0 Emask 0x1 (device error)
[8423902.269941] ata2.00: status: { DRDY DF ERR }
[8423902.269970] ata2.00: error: { ABRT }
[8423902.283137] ata2.00: configured for UDMA/133
[8423902.283173] ata2: EH complete

This happens for example when I log myself in, or try to access sdb.

Now I don't see anything wrong with the system in itself (software mirror raid), no slowdowns or anything. But I just think this is very weird.

What can I do to investigate this further? What could be the probable cause here?

Thanks!

Seems to me to be a hardware failure, check that drive with the manufacturer's diagnosis tool.

similar errors but in a VM under Xen

GOOfy, did you ever get to the bottom of this ?

I am seeing almost identical errors during boot (preventing boot from completing) but in only one (OpenSuse 11.3) of 3 or 4 virtual machines running under a Xen host.
From various things I have tried, I don't believe it is the physical drive on the host, but the virtualised drive in the guest.
Full details here.
