external usb storage device not detected
Hi!
I am running suse 10.1 on a pretty old compaq machine and my problem is that when booting the machine the connected external storage devices are somehow not scanned, sometimes the machine even hangs... however i would need a hint how to rescan or reinitialize the usb-ports once the machine is running... thx! tokehs |
Are you sure they aren't being scanned? usb uses hotplug if you unplug and replug the device it should rescan it.

you are right. once the machine is running and i unplug and replug the devices they are properly scanned... my problem is just that one the one hand it is not really a smart solution to always unplug/plug the devices and on the other hand it would in this case also be a very expensive solution because the machine is aprox. 2.500 km away and i can not always fly there just to plug the devices... that is why i need to do that somehow with a "soft-reset" of the usb bus but i do not know how!?
can u help? thx + regards tokehs |
But how do you know that "the connected external storage devices are somehow not scanned."? do they not show up in the dmesg? can you see them with lsusb? are they just not auto mounted? could you please describe your problem in more detail. what are you expecting to happen when they are "scanned?"

when i do a lsusb i get the following

what i am trying to acomplish is to manage somehow to "rescan" or "reset" or "initialize" the ports in the same way that would happen when one freshly connects a device to an usb port... reason is because the devices are not present when the machine boots, you have to plug/unplug them when the machine is running to see them as /dev/sda1... i hope that this expresses the problem a little better. i am sorry if i am quite diffuse on this on but i am quite good a networking but, as you can tell, quite poor on devices... thx! tokehs |
