i think by default most hard drives are formatted as fat32 or ntfs but can be reformatted to any filesystem (most distros can read/write fat/ntfs but those filesystems dont support permissions or suffer from fragmentation).
from what i understand the operating system looks at the mountable space as a hard drive so it is transparent to the pc whether it is a an internal or external hard drive (or whether it is an sd-card, usb, a phone, mp3 player, camera, ...). as long as it can read from or write to the formatted space you should be good to go.
