Is it internal or external modem ? Have you read any of the modem Howto at www.tldp.org ? What distro are you running > More details get faster responses.

what flavor linux? Almost all of them have gui's that can help. or read up on using minicom. I would first sugest finding out what your os's nameing convention is for the serial port (tty)(ssy) etc that will help...
