External US Robitics 56k modem not connecting properly
 

Hello, I would like to run my external US Robitics 56k modem in Debian 3.1r0a, but whenever I try and connect it always gives me an error of "Carrier found...
...don't know what to do! connecting anyway and see what happens" not exactly that, but something long those lines, the modem will connect for 20-30 seconds during this time I assume it tries to get DNS information...which it can't do, and disconnects...this is pissing me off as I have never been able to run this modem under any Linux distrobution.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could try?

After changing a setting on the modem itself, I get this for the "Carrier detect" message while connecting.

Just a little suggestion because I have little time now: If you are using kppp or another gui oriented configurator, try changing to "wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf". And check your /dev/modem is pointing to the serial por your modem is connected, like /dev/modem -> /dev/ttyS0 for com1.

External USR 56K Modem
 

Using Kppp, my internal USR modems will not connect via dialup if the "wait for dial tone" box is checked. When I clear this box, all the USR dialup modems connect. Make absolutely sure your user ID and password are correct if the modems (yours and the ISP's) are connecting initally and then disconnecting.
Best advice.... always use Kppp for a dialer on dialup connections. Works first time, every time.

KPPP doesn't work on my system, not sure why, don't really care. I use WVDial, with Gnome-PPP and they always have worked.

@runnerfrog: I'm not using /dev/modem, it's not even a device. I'm using /dev/ttyS1.

I will be trying a few things later tonight after I finish downloading updated drivers for my graphics card, I will let everyone know how those "things" go, because I know you're all just so excited to know.

After unchecking "wait for dialtone" in Gnome-PPP, I can now connect using my external modem :)

Don't know why this works, just discovered by trial and error.
If you have the "Pro" external modem, you should be able to get really high speeds, ~50K through this dial-up modem. Best dial-up modems on the market for Linux.
