External modem - slow in Linux
 

Hi,

I'm using a ZOOM 56K external serial modem to connect to the Internet in both Windows and Linux. In Windows, the modem operates at a reasonable speed, but in Linux it operates much slower.

The computer also has an hsf winmodem, but I'm not using that in either system.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to why the modem is running slowly in Linux?

In my experience, Linux has the capacity to operate the modem actually faster than Windows does.

Most of the time, if your modem is slower in Linux, this comes from a suboptimal init string. Finding/building the appropriate init string for your modem can be tricky though.

For my own modem, I built my init string myself by picking the features I wanted to activate in the .inf file provided on the Windows CD.

what is the serial connection speed set to?

No idea. But I can tell you if you tell me how to find out.

I've also noticed that the modem is going slower than it should in Windows as well - a winmodem on a different computer on the same line reports 56.0kbps, whereas Windows reports 48kbps for my external modem. Is it worth seeing if the winmodem in my computer will give better speeds?

BTW, this modem was fine on a previous computer running the same distro.
