external modem, kppp, timeout expired signal 15

Recently installed Simply mepis.
I have supraexpress 56e external modem. Modem works fine with windows and Slackware. So no hardware problems.
In Mepis KPPP I put correct DNS, passwords, pppd timeout=60sec.
Modem query returns ok.
In etc/ppp/options file noauth exists.
File permissions for pppd and kppp are setuid for owner and group(read and write)
when I try to connect it connects, authenticates username and passwd, then says pppd starting.
And i receive PPPD timeout expired, Terminating on signal 15.
What is in Mepis, preventing this modem to work?
Please help.
Thanks

You can also try qinternet or kinternet, if you can find those packages available for your distro... I think they are a SuSE specific thing, but you may be able to get them working on another distro if you are able to compile them for your distro from source...
