Unhappy External Modem install problem

I'm brand new to Linux so if this seems like "well d'uh" question please bear with me. I'm running FC1 Kernel 2.4.22.

I'm trying to install a motorola premier 33.6 external modem. I connected it to the computer and the phone line, ran the internet configuration wizard and I never get past where they're asking for my dial up information. How can I tell if FC1 is even recognizing the modem? What do I need to do to get it to work?

Sorry I can't give more information I don't know anything else.
