external modem init strings

i have a zoom 56k fax modem and everytime i connect to the internet in kppp it says i'm connected at 115200. are there any init strings that can tell me the actual connection speed like 48,000 or 50,600?

The modem reports back the actual connect speed once the automatic handshaking finishes. The problem is that kppp is not passing the message on to you. You could switch to wvdial which does report the actual speed.
