External modem dials then fails

Hi,
I connected an Encore external 56k modem to a Mandrake 10.0 machine.

I then used Control Center to set up an internet connection using the COM port the modem is connected to.

When testing the connection, the modem dials, the ISP's server answers, there is some communication, the Mandrake reports "It seems that the computer is not connected to the internet. Change some settings and try again." (I am para-phrasing here)

One possible problem is the DNS address associated with the internet connection is the one from my internal network associated with the NIC, even though I specified that the dial-up connection obtain DNS automatically. I attempted to change it but it will not retain the setting I specify, it always returns to the internal LAN setting provided by the router, even after the router AND NIC was removed from the machine.

So I have 2 questions:
1. How do I get rid of the DNS address, or release any lease provided by DHCP on the router?

2. How do I activate an existing dial-up connection? So far I have only been able to use the "Test" feature in New connection setup. Once it's created, I haven't been able to figure out where to get it to attempt to connect.

Thanks for all the help,
Bill
