External Modem compatability?
 

Can anyone tell me whether they think this modem will be compatable with linux? I am using Peanut Linux 9.2 and will soon be using Mandrake Linux 8.2. The modem I am considering buying is the US Robotics MessagePlus Modem 56K V90 Ext Serial modem. Is there anyone here has had any experience using this modem?

no experience with that particular modem but probably a good 99% of external modems have no problems running with linux..

Well sounds good. I went to the USR site, and there is no mention that it supports Linux, I know this doesn't mean that it won't work. Only that I won't be able to get drivers. It just doesn't fill me with confidence of spending £80 on something not knowing if it will work or not.

Is there anyone who has used a dial up modem with linux? What was it and how much did it cost?

well to assure you, almost any external modem works cause it doesn't require software to run the modem. just like any hardware internal modem usually works.
Best Data makes a internal hardware modem that works with no problems I have used on numerous times.. might be something looking into if you wanted to go with a internal modem even.

all external modem works under linux since u don't have to install it but only u have to define the port only


the modem u r talking about a friend of mine had it and it is working perfectly on mandrake 8.1

when talking about external modems don't be afraid about compatability with linux

Modem you mentioned working under Linux. You need no drivers just define port you using...

I think you missed the word serial...not all USB external modems work with Linux.

Since you're using Mandy 8.2, then it should be fairly straightforward. Under Linux, the device names are somewhat different to Windows devices. A quick rundown:

COM1 = /dev/ttyS0
COM2 = /dev/ttyS1
COM3 = /dev/ttyS2
COM4 = /dev/ttyS3

Now, you should open up Mandrake Control Center and go to the networking bit. Create a new modem connection, and tell which device you want to use, give the connection name (your ISP name) and phone number, and you should be set! If you're using KDE (you probably are...it is the default one for Mandy 8.2), then to connect you only need to click on the 'connect to the internet' icon on the desktop.

Just to add my 2p ;) , I've never had any problems with ELSA kit and I'm now using their ISDN PCI card after using an external ELSA modem.

They're also a proprietary company that's actively supporting Linux with drivers, etc - which is a good selling point IMHO.
