external hdd no x-windows

Hi there,

I haven't bought it yet, but I want to use an external hdd on my machine and I want to know if it will work. But before you jump to an answer, consider this:

Its a laptop.
Its USB 1.1
I don't have X installed... in fact, I don't have anything installed except a bare minimum RH8 install plus rsync.

I don't really know linux all that well. So here are my Q's:

1) Do I just plug the thing in and expect it to go? Probably not, so what will I have to do to get started?
2) Once its recognized... how can I make this new drive (the whole thing) my /home ?? So when I add new users their accounts go straight to the new drive. The old ones can either stay where they are, or move over too... no difference to me
3) Is USB 1.1 at least fast enough that the bottleneck will still be the incoming speed of the data over the internet? The fastest *Rated* upload speed of the people connecting is 640kbs - in practice it seems to work out to around 50KB/s

4) Or is it a lot easier (better?) to put a larger HDD in the laptop? I took the outer plastic off and couldn't find the thing, but I'm sure its in there somewhere Price wise, a new HDD is about the same as an external.

Thanks a bunch!

Moving to Linux - Hardware

3. Yeah, probably will still be fast enough to not be the bottleneck.

Cool
