External HDD changes locations in /dev while mounted.

I was a bit reluctant to post this problem, but either I simply can't figure out the right phrase to put in google or no one's ever posted this problem online before. I simply don't understand enough about how linux handles hard drives to figure this out on my own.

I've got an external HDD from Iomega that I've been using for over a year and lately it's been doing this thing where it suddenly changes from /dev/sdg to /dev/sdh while the partition on it is still mounted, seemingly at random. I'm often (not always) able to look at the contents of the partition, but it gives me I/O errors followed by a list of files and directories.

I am using slackware64 13.0 running kernel 2.6.29.6. Below I've provided the relevant lines from dmesg (edited out irrelevant lines to keep post under max character limit.) I'm beginning to suspect NFS has something to do with this, but I can't even begin to imagine how.

When this happens I'm able to umount -l the partition and remount it using the new /dev/sdh1 but eventually the same thing just happens and the whole drive switches back to /dev/sdg. This problem persists between reboots. It's also happened with an ext3 filesystem, in fact I switched to ext2 because it kept telling me "Aborting journal" and I was afraid I would get a corrupted journal and perhaps a destroyed file system. I just need someone to help me understand these errors in dmesg so I can figure out what's going on.

About 8 months ago I was doing some work at my brother's place and while down on the floor fiddling with cables I yanked this whole drive off the desk and it smashed into the floor (while spinning probably, I'm pretty sure this model is disk based.) I've been expecting to see some strange behavior since that happened, but it took a while and I can be certain this is related to that incident, although I'm rather convinced it is.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You may be getting power fluctuations, or access interruptions which cause the drive to be unmounted then remounted periodically. sdh is the next designation in line if sdg is already mounted. Your system thinks there are two drives attached but there obviously aren't. Damage to the drive or the USB/Firewire interface I would guess.

I agree that an intermittent electrical connection could do it, although I would have thought that the system would not assign sdh unless it saw that sdg was in use.

Personally, I would not trust a hard drive that had been dropped (running or not). How is this drive being used?

it would depend on the polling interval I guess. Maybe there is enough time for sdh to be assigned before the system notices sdg is missing ?

I use this drive primarily as an NFS share for media files I often need access to. It is not the primary storage drive for any of the files it holds and it is non-essential, if it dies it dies, and I'll be sad, but it can be replaced. It USED to be a back up drive, but that was before I dropped it.

As for the power supply the HDD has it's own plug and does not rely on the USB to provide power to it. Perhaps I should try a new plug? The power cord has never seen any wear or damage and should physically be in very good condition. I'll try to find a new power supply that provides an identical power output and see if the problem persists.

I'll also try another USB cord; although the same is true for this cord that it has never really been stressed except perhaps the time I pulled on it and the HDD fell, but I can't imagine that damaging the cord.

Is there anything else that could cause this? For now I'm still inclined to believe these symptoms are directly related to when it fell, but there's really no way for me the be certain. These symptoms only started appearing after I stopped using Samba in favor of NFS, but they did not appear for almost a month after the switch.

Thanks y'all.

The damage may not be to a visible part of the cord or supply, but to the internal connector.
The cord would be too easy ;-)
