External Hayes Modem Help on FC4

I am currently trying to setup a Hylafax Server, but before I move on to actually setting up Hylafax I want to atleast verify that my modem will work with Linux. I have two different modems that I can experiment with, a Hayes Accura 28.8 external serial modem and a US Robotics 0778 PCI Modem. I'm afraid to admit that I just don't get it, are there any good "dummies" style how-tos for modem. I've never had trouble setting up other hardware, but modems seem to be a little different than the rest.

How do identify where (ttyS1?, tty3?, etc...) my modem is installed?

What can I use to test the modem (minicom, etc..)for being able to dial out?

Here's an update, I setup the modem using FC4's native network wizard. I setup the modem and gave it my cell phone number as an ISP, when I acivate the network then it calls my cell phone. So I know that the modem is fully functional and that the line also works.

So I went back to Hylafax and added the modem this time locking the serial port and speed and it appears to have worked. Now I just have to figure out the rest of the Hylafax setup.
