Do you want to boot from the USB drive?
If so you does your BIOS have an option for booting a USB device?

You will need to either recompile the kernel to include the USB drivers or create a new intrd to include the USB drivers.

You might find running the OS from a USB drive will be slower then an IDE drive.

Have a look at www.distrowatch.com
