External hard disk = slow speed(?)
I use Mandrake 10.0
I have an external usb 2.0 hd and my mobo supports also the usb 2.0 protocol. Under winxp i get reall fast speeds. But under linux i think it's rather slow. The max speed i get is about 1,7 MB/sec. I would guess that the kernel is confused about what file system type you have on the external hard drive. I don't think that your external usb hard disk appears in /etc/fstab. Linux found it at /dev/sda. You need an entry for /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab. That may not be your only problem. I had the same problem. The supermount is the problem!!! Try to manually mount fstab, for example if your device is /dev/sda5 you use as root:
mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/removable -t vfat -o rw,umask=0 if you don't want to use supermount as default change none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/sda5,fs=vfat,--,umask=0 0 0 to /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable -t vfat umask=0,rw,iocharset=iso8859-7 0 0 have fun! |

I'm having the same kind of problem. (also a 160Go, FAT32, USB2 external device)
I don't think that mounting the device manually makes any change in the speed problem, as it is recognised by the system through supermount, and you can access to it. I'm also having locks on this device (suddenly, the system stops copying fron device to PC), but only when I copy from device to PC. I'm still investigating this, so posts will follow. What I discovered is that transfer rates aren't symetric. When I copy from the PC to the device, transfer rates are between 11&15MB/s, in the other way, they are like 5MB/s.
A few tests ago, they were only 1.4MB/s and locking the device.... quite strange I really think there's a strange behaviour in the ehci module or the usb mass storage.... |

The option sync will not work to increase speed. It will only work if you do not want to run the utility sync before unmounting. If usb-storage and sd_mod supports activating DMA for the hard drive, then the speed can will increase dramatically. Right now I guess those modules only support PIO. Also there is filesystem overhead that puts a huge load on the system.
SATA can be used for external drives and it is a lot faster than firewire 800. SATA is hotpluggable and the cable can be as long as 3 meters. |
