External hard disk = slow speed(?)

I use Mandrake 10.0

I have an external usb 2.0 hd and my mobo supports also the usb 2.0 protocol. Under winxp i get reall fast speeds. But under linux i think it's rather slow. The max speed i get is about 1,7 MB/sec. Is it nice 4 a usb 2.0?

Here is my dmesg :

[root@localhost george]# dmesg

What is goin on? How can i fix it?

PS My external hd is fat32 formated and my linux partition is ext3 formatted. Could that cause the slow speed? What am i doing wrong?

jailbait 04-06-2004 10:56 AM

"VFS: Can't find ext2 filesystem on dev sda1."

"PS My external hd is fat32 formated and my linux partition is ext3 formatted. Could that cause the slow speed? What am i doing wrong?"

I would guess that the kernel is confused about what file system type you have on the external hard drive. Check /etc/fstab to make sure that the external hard drive is described correctly there.

Here is my fstab

/dev/hda3 / ext3 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/Games vfat umask=0,codepage=869,iocharset=iso8859-7 0 0
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/MP3 vfat umask=0,codepage=869,iocharset=iso8859-7 0 0
/dev/hda7 /mnt/Mandrake_10 ext2 defaults 1 2
none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/hdd,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-7 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,sync,codepage=869,iocharset=iso8859-7 0 0
none /mnt/hdc supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=auto,ro,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-7,codepage=869 0 0
none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/sda5,fs=vfat,--,umask=0 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,ro,iocharset=iso8859-7 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

As u c it is recognised as fat (which is of course).

What is goin on?

I don't think that your external usb hard disk appears in /etc/fstab. Linux found it at /dev/sda. You need an entry for /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab. That may not be your only problem. Here is a thread which discusses problems with an external usb drive:

Hmmm

Braveheart1980 04-08-2004 03:40 PM

Any more help?

Solution

I had the same problem. The supermount is the problem!!! Try to manually mount fstab, for example if your device is /dev/sda5 you use as root:

mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/removable -t vfat -o rw,umask=0

if you don't want to use supermount as default change
none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/sda5,fs=vfat,--,umask=0 0 0
to
/dev/sda1 /mnt/removable -t vfat umask=0,rw,iocharset=iso8859-7 0 0

have fun!

Thanks fransemail! I'll try that and i'll post results!

bill_bool 05-01-2004 10:22 AM

I'm having the same kind of problem. (also a 160Go, FAT32, USB2 external device)

I don't think that mounting the device manually makes any change in the speed problem, as it is recognised by the system through supermount, and you can access to it.

I'm also having locks on this device (suddenly, the system stops copying fron device to PC), but only when I copy from device to PC.

I'm still investigating this, so posts will follow.

Best regards.

What I discovered is that transfer rates aren't symetric. When I copy from the PC to the device, transfer rates are between 11&15MB/s, in the other way, they are like 5MB/s.

A few tests ago, they were only 1.4MB/s and locking the device.... quite strange

I really think there's a strange behaviour in the ehci module or the usb mass storage....

this is *exactly* what my new usb-2.0 external harddrive gives me and I am also absolutely clueless why that is so. it may sound strange, but what transfer rates do you have if you type on another console "while true; do :; done" ? currently I have 7.3 mb/s and before I had 1.1 mb/s!

has anyone thought of specifying the external device as "sync" in the options (speaking of mandrake users) ?

Code:

/dev/sdb1 /mnt/maxtor vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0
i was having timeouts and someone recommended doing that. it seems to be fine (at the moment)

also, it was supermount earlier and i did notice slower speeds, since i reinstalled recently and had the devices connected at the time, they are in the fstab as regular entries now, and it looks like the speed is much better

The option sync will not work to increase speed. It will only work if you do not want to run the utility sync before unmounting. If usb-storage and sd_mod supports activating DMA for the hard drive, then the speed can will increase dramatically. Right now I guess those modules only support PIO. Also there is filesystem overhead that puts a huge load on the system.

SATA can be used for external drives and it is a lot faster than firewire 800. SATA is hotpluggable and the cable can be as long as 3 meters.
