Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

External CD Drive

I recently hooked up my AMD Athlon 1700xp system after about 6 months of non use. Everything is working okay but the internal cd drive stop working.

I also have an external usb cd drive but it seems I can't boot from it. I can read/write to it.

Does anybody know if this system is able to boot from an external cd drive? I do not see an option in the BIOS about booting from USB devices.

It's using an Award BIOS also.

Thnx.

It might be listed in the CD group instead, if that exists.

See if there is a BIOS update for it, sometimes they add on that functionality after the board shipped and include it in an later update.

It seems the BIOS doesn't offer booting from USB, but will check for an update.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I can't find a BIOS update for the mobo on Shuttle's or Award's sites. It's a Shuttle AK31A, AMD K7, VIA KT266a board with Award Bios.

Thnx.
