extended ascii in RH9

Hey all,
I don't know if I've submitted this already (I've gone to so many forums), but here goes:

How can one enable extended ascii? I need to type special
characters--typing ALT + a keypad combination.
I've tried enabling "nodeadkeys", but that didn't work at all.

THX

You can copy from "Applications->Character Map" if you only need a few characters (maybe not what you're looking for, but at least a start)

good luck!
