Experience with linux on a NEC Z1?
A friend has recently given me the task of fixing (needs a new OS install) an NEC Z1 computer.
I saw this as an opportunity to give the gift of linux! Especially since the system has only 96 megs of ram, I think a nice sleek linux desktop would put some pep back into this machine. This is a funny little computer, an all-in-one unit with a TFT display. The thing really seems like its a laptop turned backwards, so needless to say I think i'm up against some odd hardware. So far I have installed Slackware 10, and I am having a lot of problems. I can't get a mouse to work. When x starts up I get an XFCE desktop, but without a mouse i can' t do a whole lot. When I try to switch to a different tty so I can kill x the thing locks up and the screen turns many different colors. Quite bad. So does anyone out there have experience with one of these, or just dealing with odd hardware like this? Thanks NEC Z1 450 P III 96 megs ram S3 savage 3D LT AGP video card |
Did u get any error messages? thanks

errors
There are no errors anywhere big, though i havn't had a chance to pour over dmesg. When it locks up on the tty change, the screen just turns to blocks of orange and green and is totally frozen.
