EXA vid accel mode

Hey all, I have a Radeon mobility 9000 IGP, and I'm trying to use the EXA acceleration method in X. When I turned it on (Option "AccelMethod" "exa"), I noticed that my FPS shoots through the roof, which is good (tested on glxgears: went from ~400 originally to ~600fps, in windowed mode). However, I also noticed that the entire desktop would sort of 'freeze' for a brief moment every second or so, giving everything a really choppy feel even though 3d stuff like glxgears and 3ddesktop run WAY faster in between pauses. Has anyone had these problems before, and is there something I can configure to fix it?

The utility glxgears is not a benchmark. It is simple program to test if 3D can be rendered. Unreal Tournament or Quake should be used to test the speed of the 3D performance. ATI writes very, very poorly software, so if it glitches while it renders the gears, then you should go back to the defaults.

Ah. Well, I don't have either one of the latter, so it's the best I've got In any case, performance is significantly increased for _all_ 3D apps I've tried, not just glxgears.

It's not just the gears that pause either, it's the whole screen Too bad, was really hoping it'd work.
