ESS1897 sound drivers in Slackware 9.1

I donīt get my ESS1897 sound card to work in Slackware 9.1. When KDE comes up thereīs the following error message:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)

I found a thread for RH8, but the sndconfig solution wonīt work in Slackware 9.1 because thereīs no sndconfig programm.
