eSATA card: which kernel?

I must support a user with a x86_64 processor who recently brought the following card:

...from lspci...

02:07.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 3124 PCI-X Serial ATA Controller (rev 02)

What is the best way to find out what kernel level will support this card? (I read that 2.6.16 contained new support for the 3114 chipset). He's currently running way back in the 2.6.9 tree, and it seems not to support the card.

Is there somewhere I can read about support in each kernel (kernel.org?), or is it just best to boot to live CD's at various kernel levels and find out what does the best?

Old kernels like 2.6.9 has a lot of security problems and does not support new hardware. Try kernel version 2.6.19 or higher.
