ES1869 Sound Card problem -- Slackware!! HHHHEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPP

hi....im having problems with my soundcard......it is detectable by Windows but not by linux...and since Slackware doesn't distribute sndconfig and its library...im having some serious problems.....

I get the following error everytime I load Gnome :

I couldn't load /dev/dsp...
please check that you have permission to access /dev/dsp
and check that sound support is compiled into the kernal.....

I used the bare.i kernal....I am pretty sure that sound is supported....

i tried to change the permissions:

chmod 666 /dev/dsp* /dev/mixer

could anyone help??

Have a look in rc.modules

Have a Look in rc.modules it's in /etc/rc.d/ and see if the sound modules are commented out or if it's loading them you could also do a google/linux search and see if anyone has seen the exact module for that chipset... I don't remember seeing it in rc.modules but that dosen't mean much as there are lots of extra modules patrick dosen't put in that config file for space (i would guess). Does sound work in any other window manager and how about mpg123 some.mp3 at a command line dose that give you sound.

well good hunting hope this helps at all....
