ericsson k850i not detected via usb

Have Debian 4.0, have downloaded Kmobiletools. I have been able to connect a K800i as a mass storage device through usb and get some photos off, but Kmobiletools doesn't indicate that it's connected. K850i won't connect either as mass storage or as phone. When I use Kmobiletools and ask to reinitialise, "an error occurred while initialising" and the control panel shows that there's no device connected.
In response to gobi.d's thread 23 oct I have checked dmesg and it clearly shows my palmtop and camera connections earlier this evening but the phones don't show up. If I can get the phone to synchronize with email addresses that should finally convince my family to switch from Windows! Thanks (for any help you can offer on this and for lots of guidance through other teething issues).
