2 days ago, I have bought a new Epson printer, model Epson Stylus C58, a new model of EPSON.
I have tried to print on Linux with C50 driver, and with a little tweaking, it's work for black ink, but it runs very slowly.
Is there any idea how to fasten my black ink printing ?? because, i have tried in Windows, and the printer print with high speed.
but, the main problems is for the color mode.
I have tried with CUPS test pages, and the printes is still working (but slower than in windows), but they print with different position. but, the color is right.
it cannot print the color circle in CUPS test page.
is there any person who have Stylus C58 and found the same problem with me ?? please share with me.....
and, if I must edit the driver file of C50, can you guys guide me, what must I do.
I use Fedora Core 2.
and, in my Fedora, there is no native driver for C58 series.
there is only C50 and C60
I have tried C60 driver, and it cannot works.
so I tried C50 driver, and it works for blank ink only, but with slowwwww speed.
for the color mode, they print uncorrectly, specially the position.
for example, for yellow, the printer will print 1 cm above the actually position,
for blue, the printer will print 1 cm below the actually prosition.
and so on.
You may want to upgrade to Fedora Core 5, just because you can. I looked on the Fedora web pages and couldn't find anything specific about Epson printer drivers. Nevertheless, FC 5 might come bundled with a printer driver that will work with your printer.
Here are a couple of web pages that talk about printing in Linux.
thx for your advice.
I haven't upgrade to Fedora Core 5, because, I'm not sure that in fedora 5 there is a native driver for my Epson C58, because as long as I know, Fedora printer driver based on CUPS project.
I have browsing in your suggested sites, and still didn't found any information about Epson c58 Linux driver.
as your information, now I already can do printing black ink only on linux. I use C50 driver.
but the problem is :
1. For the blank ink -> speed to low, it printed line by line
2. For the colour ink -> the printing position is not the same as the source.
I hope there is someone here that can help me to solving this problem.
many thanks.

Stylus C58 solution in UBUNTU using Avays Driver with some trick...
Finally I found the answer for my problem installing Epson Stylus C58 driver in Ubuntu Feisty 7.04.
Many thanks for Ian Carvalho (ian@ianandanne.com) who solved my problem step by step.
The problem are :
- the configuration ekpdrc is not installed in correct location
- Avays driver always use /dev/usb/lp0 as the device, but in Ubuntu for USB Printer it's in /dev/usblp0. So, you must create symbolic link in /dev/usb/lp0 -> /dev/usblp0
First step, edit or create /etc/ekpdrc with the lines below :
<ekpdrc>
<defaultprinter>sc58</defaultprinter>
<printer name="sc58">
<aliasname>sc58</aliasname>
<devicepath>/dev/usb/lp0</devicepath>
<dummypath>/var/ekpd/ekplp0</dummypath>
<serverport>35586</serverport>
</printer>
</ekpdrc>
second step. create symbolic link from /dev/usb/lp0 -> /dev/usblp0
third step. try install again the pips driver.
try to print with the new driver, in my computer, IT'S WORK ALREADY !!!
I will quote the email who solved the problem for me, I hope this will help you who have some problems with me :
Quote:
Hi Stefanus,
Can you make sure that you have the file /etc/ekpdrc
The reason for the error is because the "devicepath" variable is not set
correctly in the ekpdrc file.
If you have a USB printer the device path should be
<devicepath>/dev/usb/lp?</devicepath>
Where ? could be 0, 1, 2, depending on which device the printer is
connected to.
You need to have the /etc/printcap that is generated by cups. You need
to configure this using either the browser or any cups printer
configuration utility that you are using.

Ian

HI, I found the same problem w u, and i think thats cool.
it solve my problem in my Feisty.
But I'm using PClinuxOS in my second computer, is the driver compatible with my distro?
Btw thanx in advance
sorry, I never use PCLinuxOS in my computer.
but, maybe you can use the trick above in your computer.
, just make sure that the PPD file is copied in the right directory,
and set your computer as in Ubuntu Feisty trick above.

Thanks for all the info. I create the "ekpdrc" file, then the symbolic link and then re-installed the pips that I downloaded from the avasys website.
I am using Freespire 2.0 which is based on Ubuntu now. I am trying to print using an Epson D92 but am still failing. It used to struggle on the install section (not loading the ekpd-tool) but thanks to the above info I've got past this and installed the driver.
The driver now appears in the printer install list:
Add Printer Wizard (I select local printer (usb)
Select Others>Epson Inkjet Printer #1>Photo Image Print System
Manufacturer - Epson, Model - Stylus C90 (downloaded driver from avasys for C90 and D92)
Click Test
....Hard drive makes a noise as though it sending the print but nothing happens on the printer
I'm open to suggestions.
I created the symbolic link with lp0 but also ran through the instructions for lp1 as well since laptop has 2 usb ports; just wanted to make sure I was connecting the printer to the one that I had set up.
