Neither from Mandriva 2006 nor Knoppix 5.1 can I get this printer ro work. Under the former I downloaded and installed the Epson drivers held at www.avasys.com but could get neither scanner nor printer to work. Under the latter, it reported that either the divers were unavailable or I didn't have adequate permission, even though I tried it as root as well as regular user.

Can anyone tell me how to remedy this? TIA
You may have done some of this already:
-Make sure it's coming up as a recognized USB device at the OS level.
-This -may- be more of a cups issue. Make sure you can admin cups first. For example, you should be able to go to localhost:631 and add the printer there as root. If not, I belive the command line is lpadd -u root. I'm very quick and dirty when it comes to cups though. Maybe someone can suggest a better way?
I have no problem getting into CUPS but nothing moves tis printer. I have several machine in my Office running Mandriva and a variety of printers without having ever seen this kind of problem. Indeed my domestic machine has an epson CX6400 running under drivers downloaded from www.avasys.com. The funny thing is that I could never get it working undr Windows 98 on the same machine (althoug it does on my laptop). Given that the driver is specifically fo this peinter, could the problem lie in some conflic or other. incidentally lpadd doesn't exist om machine. I really need a linux printer expert. Thanks for trying though.
Happily I have solved the first part of the problem, getting the printer to print. More important, I know why and how. In CUPS you have to give the printer a name. The problem is that you wouldn't know at that point that the same name must match that in the file
/etc/ekpdrc. This is my edited file as edited:
# This file called /etc/ekpdrc
# the PrinterName has to be the same as in CUPS. This one has been set to
# match John Jones RX700. Note the name set up by the driver installation
# routine is sprx700. I changed it as I say above, to EPSONPRX700 to match
# the name assigned by CUPS.
#
# PrinterName = sprx700
PrinterName = EPSONPRX700
PrinterDevicePath = /dev/usb/lp0
DummyDevicePath = /var/ekpd/ekplp0
CommandServerPort = 35586
All I have to do now is to get the scanner to work!
I may have a a brief problem getting /etc/rc.d/init.dekpd to start at boot up but that shouldn't be insoluble.
My last message might be misleading. The name wasn't assigned by CUPS. I assigned it. If I had realised what name the driver downloaded from avasys.jp had called it 'sprx700' and assigned that when setting up CUPS, I don't think I would have had the problem in the first place.
Since then I have also got the scanner to work. I did three things.
1) In /etc/sane.d I edited epson.conf so that the usb <Mafg ID> <machine> ID were as reported by lsusb. From memory (Ican't get to the machine right now):
usb 0x04b 0x0810
2) the logical device ID can vary from:
/dev/usb/scanner0 or
/dev/usbscanner0
Try each one in turn. The odd thing is, thast they don't seem to actually appear in /dev.
3) Finally, I copied the contents of epson.conf to epkowa.conf (in the same directory.
