Epson printer/scanner purchase advice?

After a distinguished service, my Canon MP610 has given up the ghost. The things I liked about it were the printer and scanner just worked (with Gutenprint and SANE at least as far back as I remember), duplex printing and ridiculously cheap compatible ink cartridges.

Does anyone have any positive experience with a mid-range all-in-one printer/scanner that might still be available new?

My impression from reading more recent threads is that Canon's Linux drivers don't work too well for recent models.
I don't like the Instant Ink concept, so despite mainly positive comments I'm inclined to steer away from HP.

I'd therefore be particularly interested if anyone can tell me a specific model Epson they have working, even more so if you use Slackware 14.2 and Alien Bob's packages escpr and iscan (although that is being exceptionally lazy).

Hi...

If you really liked it, you can purchase a replacement MP610 here or here, if in the UK or Europe.

Regards...

I have a new HP 5740. I did not sign up for their ink services.

The printer itself is a rather basic deskjet, but I do very little printing these days, so it's adequate to my needs.

epson L355 (printer + scanner + wifi)

I would prefer Epson L355 (or next generation).
For one part this printer has separated ink-tanks and you can buy the ink-bottles individual.
The other part is an easy integration to Linux - in my case Ubuntu on laptops:
HP with Ubuntu 12.04 (precise)
HP with Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial).

On both printing and scanning rock-solid.

I have an Epson WorkForce WF-3640 that works well with Linux. Works well enough for printing business documents and photos and the ink cartridges last a long time. Sheet feeder feeds straight and it does duplex scan and print. Complaints are that the ink levels are reported as low, well before they are actually low and I've had some issues with clogged ink jets. The clogged ink jet thing would be a bigger deal if I wanted to print high quality photos.

I saw the mention of HP, and thought I'd chime in. I've had HP's for a while now, and haven't had any problems with them using generic/cheap ink. The printer will pop up a message about it being "Not GENUINE HP"....which I ignore. Zero problems with them over the past 8+ years, on several devices.

I WILL say that the reported ink level thing is an issue...which you can fix with a paper clip. There's a reset button on the cartridge...remove the cartridge, press the button and hold it for a few seconds, and put the cartridge back in. Your ink level has 'magically' gone back up, and will print fine until it's dry....seriously.

Epson Stylus SX4xx

This may be a bit old, but I have used my Toshiba with Ubuntu 12.04 with a variety of these printers, both USB and Wifi, from 2013 till now. I use cheap ink and have no complaints (except if I leave Spain for the summer, a cartridge may have dried up and need soaking in water).

Epson Printer

I have an Epson L365 printer/scanner which works flawlessly on Windows, but I don't like Windows and can't get it to work on Linux Mint 17.3. I've tried every which way, a blank page comes out. Such a pity.

Thanks for all the input. After the sensible thought to seek advice, I plunged almost blindly into the purchase of an inexpensive Epson XP-630, using points from a well known UK loyalty card
The link to Epson drivers however gave me some assurance that it should be supported.

Initial impression is it will do. It's not as well built as my Canon but it did cost half the price.

I used Alien's Slackbuild to build a package with the latest version of escpr. Once installed there was nothing more to do.
I installed Alien's packages iscan and iscan-data for the scanner. To get it working I added a line for epkowa to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and had to add the vendor id and product id to /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf

Too early to say I'm happy and I haven't played with the wifi function yet but this All In One certainly works.
