You need to install sane first, the good news is that epson scanners are well supported in linux.

epson
I do have the xsane-0.89 for redhat install and gimp -plugins and gimp as well.
I execute this command" scanimage --list-devices" I get: no scanner were identified.
on the other hand, I do have an hp print that use usb as well, so I wonder if the scanner is not trying to use the same usb-port as the print.
I was trying modprobe to access the scanner and i got an error message saying, no such command

xsane is just a GUI to sane, you wont get anywhere unless you install sane.

I have an epson 1650, it took me a liitle digging to get it to work, but actually it was quite simple once I found the info.
This is for RH 7.3 hopefully it will be similar.
Go to the /etc/sane.d directory, and find the epson.conf file open it up with your favorite editor. Comment out scsi epson Uncomment and change the line usb /dev/usbscanner0 so it reads like usb /dev/usb/scanner0
That was the info I got from the epson iscan driver directions. I am not using their driver but it was still necessary to make those changes to get it working. Scanns extrememly fast and with uotstanding quality!!

can you please tell me step by step howto go to /etc/sane.d and find the epson.conf
I did try to open the epson.conf with xemacs, and the directory is empty.
when I use xemacs to open /etc/sane.d I see epson.conf and a lot of other files.

Do the following, "cd /etc/sane.d/" then "mcedit epson.conf".
You should also learn how to use the midnight commander file browser, type "mc" to start it.
