I'm probably a bad person to give advice since I'm such a NEWB but after having the same problem I have come across some solutions. I've read that a lot of people are having trouble using the tar files on redhat 9, speficially at the point of modprobe. As a followup I have read that people have solved this by using the RPM versions, although I personally did not get the rpms to work. I think maybe the reason was that I didn't uninstall the tar files, and/or that I double clicked the rpms instead of doing it another way, dunno. But here is the site for the RPMS. Give it a shot if you want.

Hope this helps. Take care.
