ens1371 "not supported" - SuSE 10.0

Sigh... I'm sure this is a FAQ but searching on ens1371 only produced one (contentious) topic in the SuSE forum and badly dated stuff here. SuSE 9.3 sound is good but the distro's wobbly. SuSE 10.0 out of the box, sound's OK, too. Do the online updates and sound stops working and I get a flood of "module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag." messages when I try to set up the card with YaST. Go back to "out of the box" 10.0 and all is well again. Oddly, "beeps" (e.g., breaking glass sound when trying go from a secure to non-secure site while browsing) continue to work just fine. I've tried alsaconf and alsamixer and alsactl store after that - nada. The sample sound in alsaconf plays as it should, gamix launches and is responsive but KsCD, for example, is still totally silent. I've been using SuSE for longer than I can remember and Linux since the 0.9x days but this one has me baffled.

What are you updating when doing the online update? I have a SB Vibra16 that works with the kernel's ens1371 driver, which I have compiled as a module.

You say mixer controls work and sound events are ok, but KsCD doesn't produce sound. Have you checked the following?

1) KsCD configuration. Click the Extras button -> Configure KsCD. There's a section for CD-ROM device settings which includes some options for digital audio playback.

2) When checking mixer settings, did you make sure KMix doesn't have the CD muted?

3) Have you checked the audio cable connecting the CD-ROM to the sound card or mobo? I see lots of people that wonder why they can't hear their CDs and didn't know about that cord.

To claify, alsaconf followed by gamix works. KAMix, which is the mixer I've been using all along, doesn't work. It basically says "I see no sound card", which is reasonable because YaST can't configure the card. See below for a quick overview of the problem.

1) Keep in mind that KsCD worked like a charm until I updated to SuSE 10.0 (from 9.3); the settings carried forward from 9.3.

2) and 3) Good points, however, if I can't get a mixer running, the issue of muting and cables is ...ah... moot. (As an added data point, I have a Happauge TV card that uses a cable with 1/8" phone jacks to pass audio from the TV card to the sound card. There's no audio there, either, although the video's fine. And, of course, that worked under 9.3, too.)

Reiterating, the problem is centered on something Novell/SuSE did between 9.3 and 10.0. Here's a sample of the errors that show up when trying to configure the card:
May 19 08:10:47 wxsat kernel: snd_seq: module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag.
May 19 08:10:47 wxsat kernel: snd_seq: disagrees about version of symbol snd_timer_stop

May 19 08:10:47 wxsat kernel: snd_seq: Unknown symbol snd_info_register

May 19 08:10:47 wxsat kernel: snd_seq: Unknown symbol snd_info_create_module_entry
May 19 08:10:47 wxsat kernel: snd_seq: disagrees about version of symbol snd_info_free_entry
May 19 08:10:47 wxsat kernel: snd_seq: Unknown symbol snd_info_free_entry
[and blah, blah, blah...]
Line 1's kind of a killer, doncha think?

I've raised these issues on the SuSE forum but have yet to get a reply. I can't imagine I'm the only person in the universe with this problem.
