Encryption prevents harddrive detection?

So I just recently used the text-based 7.10 Ubuntu installer and partitioned my hdd with the "Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM" option. The only time I successfully restarted & booted back into it was directly after the install. Even if I put another hdd as primary, and the encrypted one as a secondary drive, BOTH drives fail to be recognized. Is the motherboard somehow being held up from detecting the existence of the drives b/c of the encryption on one of the drives? I even set jumper settings and that didn't help.

If the bios is not detecting the drives it is a hardware problem and not a OS problem.

I initially thought the same thing. I've switched the IDE cables, double checked the power source, set jumpers, etc. I don't think it's any coincidence that it just so happened to stop working right after I put a fresh install with encryption. The point of encryption is to keep people out, but what I'm asking is if the encryption could possibly prevent detection...
