Enabling 7.1 support for ALC892 audio codec in Kubuntu 10.10

The subject says it all. I've got a 2.1 system running right now just fine, but right now, my sound options extend to "RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200] Digital Stereo (HDMI)" and "Internal Audio Analog Stereo", the latter of which is the only one which seems to have any effect (presumably because the first is for the HDMI audio which I'm currently not using). If I set up a full 7.1 system, I'd like to A: know that it would work, and B: have more control than just master volume. Any way to accomplish this? I looked around and found some solutions involving moving back to an older kernel (which I'd rather avoid), third party drivers that only supported up to 5.1, etc, but nothing specifically solving this problem. Any advice would be much appreciated.
