Enable USB-support from the OS ?
 

Hi,

I have a bit of a situation with a external harddrive (WD Elements 1TB).
I have an old computer i would like to use with that drive, but it seems like there is a bug or something in the BIOS so i can't have that drive plugged in and start the OS, it freezes after it finds my 2 other hdd's.
The computer is a HP D230 MT, and i've checked the HP website for BIOS-upgrades, the last is from 2005 :scratch:, i got the latest version.

The drive works fine if i just plug it in after the OS is loaded.

So to the real question :)

Is it possible to turn on USB-support from the OS after i've disabled it in BIOS ? I´ve tried searching the net for this but haven´t really found anything relevant :o

i had the same situtation with a flash card reader on an old PC, disabling it in the BIOS did not help...
my final solution was to put a switch in series with VBUS on the USB line going to the card reader.

pbharris: ok, anychance you could explain how you did that ? I didn´t really understand...the only reason i've tried disabling all usb support in BIOS is to get the computer running at all.

Anyone else who might know if it´s even possible to modify something that i set in BIOS through an OS ? I know there is some way to control CPU speed for example, or CPU fan speeds...does it work for USB aswell ?
