emachine and linux networking

Hello,

My name is John Tankersley and I am seeking some help regarding the networking of two machines so they can talk to each other. I have installed SuSE linux 8.2 Professional on each machine. One machine is an emachine model W2247 which I would like to use as the client machine. The other machine is one I had built for me. Both use amd athalon processors.
I am using a netgear ethernet switch to link them. Model is
FS105. A friend and I tried several different ways to have the machines ping each other to no avail. We have tried by disabling the lan on the board through the bios on the emachine. We installed an Linksys network card which is supported by linux. No change . We have tried a direct crossover cable. My friend checked the routing. It is ok.
Gateway. IP addresses no change. Linux installed fine on the machines. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.?

Thank-you,

John Tankersley

Do an ifconfig on both machines and see if there is an entry for eth0. If so are you pinging by hostname or by ip number. If you are trying to ping by hostname and do not have a DNS server, you need to edit the /etc/host file and add the hostname of the other machine.

If there is not an entry, I think that there is a file named dmesg file in the /var/log directory. This file displays the boot messgaes for the last boot. Check to see if there is an entry for eth0 and if so if there are any error messages.

Also what is the make and model of the network cards that you are using?
