Ejecting DVD Disk
I've gotten MPlayer to play DVD movies beautifully on RH8. Thanks for everyone's help. Could not have done it without you.
I'm having problems ejecting the DVD disk when I'm finished with it - a message comes up saying that the device is busy. There is a similar thread in the archives on this site, but I couldn't decipher an answer out of it. I am indeed a newbie, but I'm learning. Thank you in advance for your patience with me.

Make sure you are not in the directory that the disc was mounted to (which it shouldn't have been...) and then type:
eject
As root. Also, you can check /etc/mtab to see if it shows if the device is mounted, if so, where.
Cool

I've tried logging in as root and changing directories. I still get the same message for eject - device or resource busy. I looked at /etc/mstab and couldn't recognize anything that would indicate a mount of the dvd drive (/mnt/cdrom or alias /dev/dvd). I also tried a variety of combinations of options on the eject command - some showed more "effort" towards ejecting the disk (multiple tries for different device types), but to no avail.
Being a newbie, I'm at the very high end of the learning curve. If my question shows a lack of understanding of a basic concept, gross ignorance, or flat out stupidity, please point me to a man page or other source where I can learn what I need to to better understand and fix this problem.
Thanks again for your help. This site has been a lifesaver.

ha ha ha, no your question seems to screem out bug, but I am trying to see if there is something else to describe your problem.
How do you get mplayer to play your dvd's. Also, when this happens, could you post your /etc/fstab file and also your /etc/mtab file.
Other places to look for reasons why it won't eject:
/var/log/messages
Please post the relevant sections of /var/log/messages here when this happens as well.
Cool

MasterC, thank you for your help. The good news is that the problem stopped happening. The bad news is that I can't reproduce it. Still, your references to /etc/fstab, /etc/mtab, and var/log/messages give me a place to look should I have similar problems in the future. I'm trying to learn Linux doing stuff I feel like doing (like watching Office Space), but it would probably do me some good to get into those files and directories and understand them.
The eject problem stopped happening after I edited the /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf to reflect my preferences (actually, the choices that were needed to allow the program to run on my computer). I had been typing in $ mplayer -vo x11 -ao sdl -dvd 1. Now that I've got the video and audio drivers in the .conf file, all I have to do is type $ mplayer -dvd 1 and I'm off to the races. I still have to learn the keys to use while the movie's playing, but that is well documented in the mplayer man files. I'm not fond of the mplayer gui - for me it's more trouble than it's worth - so I'm sticking with mplayer run from the terminal.
If editing the conf file is what fixed the problem, this post probably belonged under the software heading. Thanks again for your time.
