EDAC and DIMM


I have a OEL 5.4 (red-hat clone) 64 bit server that is giving the following error :-

Oct 1 09:13:46 ct-on-db kernel: EDAC k8 MC0: general bus error: participating processor(local node origin), time-out(no timeout) memory transaction type(generic read), mem or i/o(mem access), cache level(generic)
Oct 1 09:13:46 ct-on-db kernel: EDAC MC0: CE page 0x5c4aaf, offset 0xff0, grain 8, syndrome 0xa1e8, row 2, channel 0, label "": k8_edac
Oct 1 09:13:46 ct-on-db kernel: EDAC k8 MC0: extended error code: ECC chipkill x4 error

This would suggest a DIMM problem. However if I run I get the following:-

There are only four errors in total, both on the same channel.

This is an active box and frankly I'd have expected far more errors for faulty DIMMS. It's also telling - possibly - that the same, low number of errors is reported by two chips on the same channel.

Doesn't this point to a memory controller/motherboard problem ?
