Earphones only work with sound in one ear (?)

Ubuntu 22.x LTS

I've tried several earphones, Apple brand and off brand, I've tried them all on my HP Desktop. All of them will give sound in only one ear.

What gives ?

Blow canned air into the headphone jack/port.

maybe even rubbing alcohol on something really small like a toothpick, eh?

Addendum: pulled half the cotton off cu-tip and used rubbing alcohol on it and it made it work!

it's a long shot, but, if it's not already installed, install pavucontrol (the pulse audio mixer). Then go to Output Devices and click the "Lock" icon to verify that neither channel is muted.

Have you tested the earbuds with another device to make sure that they work okay?
