DWL-520+ driver install

ok well i was looking around at the forum and there was some prizm drivers that would work for the DWL-520+ b version and well i was wondering how it is that i would install the card...i wanted to know were i can get the drivers and how i install them...please help me...i'm new to linux...oh yea forgot to say....i'm using Fedora Core 4 test 2...so please if there another system that works better for that card then tell me...also i wanted to know how to install my graphics card...its a Chaintech gefoce 5700 256 mb...now i can find drivers for the windows version and probably linux version but i just wanted to know how to go about installing them...also ndiswrapper...what does that do

Use Fedora's Install/Remove program and install nvidia drivers, for your video card. Also install ndiswrapper, it runs the windows drivers on linux for your wlan. Use "lspci" & "lspci -n" at a console, write down the info for your wlan, then check the ndiswrapper web site for how to install it and which drivers to use.

ok so i should just have to do get the info for the card and then the web site should tell me everything i need to know...i tried it before but there was something that wasn't working right so i will try it again..i personaly find linux to be very very fast and better than windows just have to get it to work online thats all...but hey thanks for all your help

Depending on the version of the DWL 520+ card you might also be successful with the hostap driver. I couldn't get ndiswrapper to work for me, but hostap did work....

ok well geomatt...i have a dwl-520+...now its the b version i believe...so i think it uses prism drivers...but anyways...can you link me to the acual drivers...yes i'm a noob and i don't know what driver to install exactly..just right click on the driver i need and get there address and post them...i really can help this but i just am a noob and well if i can get this computer to use linux online i will say good bye to windows forever

Being a noob is something everyone goes thru, me many times because I keep forgetting stuff

As a first attempt you might want to try the orinoco driver that is usually included in the kernel.

try (as root):

Code:

modprobe orinoco

and see if that starts up your wireless card by running:

iwconfig

and see if anything comes up

If that doesn't work, and you want to try the hostap driver then click here to get the driver and the utilities packages. You'll want the latest stable releases of both: hostap-driver-0.3.7 and hostap-utils-0.3.7.

untar them and then take a look at the README file for installation instructions.

You may need to upgrade the firmware of your card - check out the instructions here

Also there is a good set of instructions for installing the driver here.

Just follow the instructions and post any problems that come up...

ok well thanks....well i know i have to do the make install and things like that but doing it is kind of like ?WHAT?...but i will try that...thanks for all your help...

ok well been a while and everything...now i got it installed with ndiswrapper got all that...but when i try to config it, its all messed up...is there any other linux thats maybe a little easier to start out on and maybe a little friendier to wireless
