Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Hi to all, i'm italian so, please, be patient if my english isn't perfect I write here because no one of italian Fedora and Ubuntu forums could help me.
I've a problem with my dvd writer. I think no linux distro can detect my Dvd Writer, because i tried with Fedora/Ubuntu/OpenSuse/Mandriva/Zenwalk and no one decect it. I must boot distros from liveusb because livecds don't start.
I have Ubuntu 9.10
A notebook ASUS PRO52RL with motherboard ASUS X51RL
Windows detect it as "SLIMTYPE DVD A DS8A1P ATA DEVICE"
If u need some more informations ask me. Thank you for help.

This suggests that you should go into the BIOS settings and change the boot order so that CDs are booted first.
The rest of you problem is confusing, please be more specific. What are you trying to do and what specifically does not work ?

Many people seem to have reported problems with the model of DVDRW drive in all OS.
First look for a firmware update from HP.
Otherwise lshw says 'the controllers are OK'

LiveCDs BOOT, but loading them return errors or timeouts, i think due to dvd writer problems.
But it's not important at the time, the main problem is that Ubuntu (but also other distros) can't detect DVD writer
@amani
Thx, I'll try to find some firmware updates... i hope this is the final solution...
