DVD writer drops to PIO when burning
Hi all,
As the title says, my DVD writer drops from DMA to PIO when burning. dmesg | tail gives me the following message:

Sure enough, doing hdparm on the dvd writer tells me DMA is off - before burning it was definitely on (as indicated by hdparm before the burn).
Thing is, it's telling me about a timeout on my CD writer too, which I thought was strange - there was no disk in the CD writer at the time, and the drives seem to be configured correctly, i.e. the master/slave jumper settings seem correct. I tried disconnecting the CD writer and burning the DVD again (hurrah for rewriteable media!), and although I get a scsi timeout, the drive stays in DMA mode.

My DVD and CD drives are on the same IDE channel (1), with the CD writer being the master device and the DVD writer being the slave device. I tried changing them around to see if that made a difference, but it didn't.
This didn't used to be the case; I used to have my DVD writer as a slave to my main drive on IDE-0 and my CD writer as a slave device to an ancient 1.6Gb Fujitsu drive on IDE-1. Since I don't use my CD writer for writing much, it may or may not have been happening for ages... (Now I have 2 Samsung HDD's on IDE-0 and my optical drives on IDE-1.)
Leaving the CD writer disconnected isn't much of a solution though, I still use it for reading quite a bit, it seems better at reading scratched CDs.
I recently changed my motherboard and upgraded my distro, so I couldn't tell you if the problem lies with the mobo or the distro. I never noticed this problem with Slackware 9.0 kernel 2.4.20. (old mobo was a Jetway V266B with a VIA KT266A chipset)
So, does anyone know what could be causing this problem, or how I can fix it? Are there any patches for a 2.4.31 kernel that might help? (I wouldn't know where to look).

For those who might be interested, i've fixed the problem by upgrading to kernel 2.6.14.4 (latest stable 2.6 kernel according to kernel.org) and using ATAPI instead of ide-scsi, now I can use both my optical drives at once without anything dropping back to PIO mode
Under 2.4.31 I was having loads of trouble writing DVDs. I later found that I couldn't even get DVD+R to work (even in PIO mode), even though I could write CD-R and DVD-RW just fine, growisofs would just bomb out with this message:
:-[ WRITE@LBA=10h failed with SK=5h/ASC=21h/ACQ=02h]: Input/output error
Strangely enough, my old kernel 2.4.20 installation let me write DVDs fine, even though it didn't recognise my southbridge chipset on my new mobo, and had to burn in PIO mode (so it wasn't poor quality media that was the problem).
This leads me to belive that either:
- Something that was working in kernel 2.4.20 is broken in 2.4.31
...or...
- I missed out something in the kernel config when I was building 2.4.20
Hope this helps somebody who has similar problems.
