DVD R doesn't read disks it produces in Fedora

I am currently using Fedora Core 6 on my machine.

Gigabyte GA-VT600 Mboard
1 GB RAM DDR 166
Western Digital 80 GB drive - dual boot with Windows 98
PowMax 500 W power supply

I have been trying to install a DVD combo recorder. My first try was an LG GSA-H10AK, which didn't read any disks nor record any. It was returned.

My second try is a Sony DRU-830A. It will record DVD format data disks on both Imation and Memorex disks, both of which have dark backgrounds. I can read the disks on my DVD R in my XP laptop, but when I try to read them in FC6, I get a 'blank disk' on my desktop and when I try to read them, I get a 'Malformed URL' notification. BTW, I can read pre-recorded DVDs and CDs with shiny backgrounds.

I'm beginning to get a little frustrated. I have downloaded and recorded Fedora 7, but have quite a bit of data I would like to be able to read back into the computer after/if I can get Fedora 7 loaded.

Any thoughts???

1. What application are you using to write the disks?

2. What versions of

- cdrecord
- growisofs
- dvd+rw-format

etc.

do you use?

3. What filesystem settings are you using for the discs?

4. How are you attempting to mount the discs when reading them after a write?

5. Does your burning program have a "verify write" feature? Does it report success or failure when verifying a write?

All that I can suggest is to play with these - in K3B for example, you can easily play with the parameters you are using for the filesystem settings using its menus. Also, I've experienced something similar with multi-session discs in the past - I never ever, use multisession or packet writing...

I have a spindle of 100 DVD-Rs here that do the exact same thing. Thought I was getting a really good deal on them too...

For the FC7 disc, I burnt the DVD from the iso image. For
data disks, I'm using Joliet encoding.

For all of the disk, I've used automount to bring them up in
the file manager, Konqueror. Windows Explorer reads all the
disks on my laptop, but not in the desktop machine.

Yes. It has indicated success for each of four discs
I've burned.

I have also updated my mboard BIOS to the latest available
and have updated the DVD drive firmware to the latest
version.

These were closed sessions without multisessions. I hope
this better defines the problem.

Yikes!

That sounds pretty standard and complete is just about what I have here... and mine's working.

All that's left is maybe a bad medium (bad discs) or a broken drive?

It is conceivable that the discs maybe do not retain their data too well - if they use some kind of el cheapo dye... so they'll verify, but an hour later the data on them would be gone (this has seemed to happen to me in the past too...)

This sounds strange. Have you tried another Linux distro (even Live CD if you have 2 drives)?

Funny thing about this spindle of DVD-Rs is that my Plextor actually writes to them fine. It just can't read the disc it just wrote. If I put the disc in another computer it's readable though. How's that for strange? Confused the !@#$ out of me for a while.

FWIW they're kind of purplish colored... I recall back in the day greenish CD-Rs had similar quality problems. Probably not the best way to identify a bad manufacturer/supplier but that's all I got.

Hmm, maybe not so strange... I had a similar failure on an LG drive once - it would read fine, but wouldn't write nothing no more... maybe yours is just reveresed? I. e. some form of hardware failure that allows writing, but not reading?

The disc color can be any color that does not reflect infrared.

If the write speed is too fast, the disc will wobble. The wobbling does include distortion of the pits. I suggest write a very slow rate to reduce any distortion. If you can not re-write the disc, set the speed of the drive with hdparm and image the disc. Use either ddrescue or dd_rescue to aid in imaging the disc.

Try mounting the disc manually.

If the problem is not fixed, use a lint-free q-tip and special solution to clean the lens of the optical drive. Also make sure the blank disc is clean.

I finally gave up on the Sony DVD recorder. I replaced it with a Lite-on unit, and now I can record and read the disks I produce, along with all the others I produced with my previous CD only Recorder.

I guess I got caught up in assuming that a product from a company with a decent quality reputation couldn't have this type of failure fresh out of the retail box.

Anyway, thanks for all the help and suggestions. I really appreciate it.
