dvd-r config with mdk 9.1
im a linux newbie (mdk 9.1), and i got a problem with k3b config.
might come from a wrong config with the dvd-r (hdc) whose scsi emulation is not set on (it is with the cd-rw hdd) :

***my lilo.conf was:***

append="quiet devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off"

***fstab was:***

none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0
none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

with mount command, i got:

none on /mnt/cdrom type supermount (ro,dev=/dev/hdc,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0)
none on /mnt/cdrom2 type supermount (ro,dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0) (..)

So i made the following changes:

append="quiet devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off"

none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0
none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd1,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

then reboot.

Now, mount gives :

none on /mnt/cdrom type supermount (ro,dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0)
none on /mnt/cdrom2 type supermount (ro,dev=/dev/scd1,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0)

but in hdrake and k3b, the dvd-r is still recognized as /dev/ide/...
what happened? thnx for your help.

Did you rerun lilo after making the change?

Did you restart the PC?

Does dmesg show SCSI emulation for both drives?

Does cdrecord --scanbus show both drives?

thnx michaelk
actually, i just found i had to run lilo before rebooting.
so did i and now everything is fine, except that the kde icon for my dvd-r disappeared from the desktop, and i don't know how to make a new one. :-\

You are using Supermount. If you are using KDE you just need to do the following:

Right-click on desktop
Select Create New ... > Link to Location (URL)
In the box that comes up, enter File Name: 'DVD-RW' and location: '/mnt/cdrom' + click OK.

You then right click on your new icon and select Properties to change the Icon to one that you want.

As I am thinking of getting a DVD±RW myself, maybe you can tell me whether yours works OK with supermount. I have Mandrake 9.1, and K3B 0.10 (dodgy numbering, this comes after 0.9).

Just reply here I will get a link e-mailed to me!

thnx davecs. it worked fine.
actually i got a DVD-R, not a DVD-RW, so i can't answer your question.
anyway, i've still some problem with k3b config, so im afraid i can't help you :-\

When I upgraded to KDE 0.10 that is when I found all this stuff to expedite DVD writing.

If you haven't done so already, visit:

Follow the instructions there and add PLF, CONTRIB and TEX (as a minimum) to your software sources. (Contrib is not needed if you have the Linux Format cover DVD with Mandrake 9.1 and Contrib included).

Now you can use Mandrake Control Centre > Software Management to upgrade K3B to '0.10tex', and you will also find the other files needed for K3B (except eMovix which you probably won't need anyway). You may find that dependencies force an upgrade of your entire KDE desktop to version 3.1.4 but it's worth it. Hope you have a fast internet connection!
