DVD playback bouncy on Thinkpad R61i

I just purchased a Thinkpad R61i. Everything is working pretty much out of the box with Kubuntu Gutsy, just one annoying thing: DVD playback seems to bounce all over the place. It is not that the video is choppy, it is more like someone who was filming the movie couldn't hold the camera still (kind of a Blair Witch Project if you will). Has anyone else run into this problem? These are SATA drives. I know you can switch the bios to compatibility mode for the SATA drive.... but I didn't really want to try that only as a last resort. I also wasn't sure if that would hose my installation, since I installed without compatibility mode being set. Has anyone else seen this problem or know of a fix?

Maybe try another video player or install other codecs. Could also be the graphics drivers (maybe).
