DVD "packet writing?"

Hell All,

After many hours of searching archives and googling without result, I've decided to ask the experts:

How do I set up my DVD+/-RW drive (does all five formats) so that it behaves like a normal magnetic disk?

As background, I've got several of these drives and there's some so-called "packet writing" software that I've got loaded on my Windows boxes that lets windows treat either CD or DVD re-writeable media (of any format) as if it were a standard floppy drive. I'm looking for the same thing for my linux boxes. Has anybody done this yet?

Patches exist for the 2.6 kernels, written by Dmitry Torokhov and Jens Axboe, but they've been ignored and allowed to rot. I don't think the 2.6 kernel does packet writing yet.
