DVD and CDROM with VIA chipset

Hi,

I have sometimes the same error-code (DriveReady SeekComplete Error) with status=0x51 for both dvd-reader and cd-writer. I'm using it as root, so permissions is not an issue.
But... I'm using an Abit VH6-II motherboard with a VIA chipset and I wonder if that could be the problem. Getting sometimes an error in Window too, so I wonder... Is there a driver for VIA chipsets for linux too? Where do i find them?

Thanks,

Ronald

Ronald-be,

see if u get any "hdx lost interrupt" message . If that's the case pass these kernel arguments pci=noapic or acpi=off

This prob also throws the same error code.

Both the CD-ROM and DVD add unhide in your fstab file. Also change user to users so that any user can mount it. You may want to use auto instead of iso9660. The kernel should be smart enough by now to pick the right filesystem.

If you want to set chmod on the DVD drive you may have to use blockdev but on the real device instead the symbolic link that Linux makes. Also you will have to find what group Linux used for the CD-ROM and DVD drive. Then add yourself to that group. If you are using a service like PAM, read the manual and edit the config files to set it up properly.

You can use compressed air and spray it in the CD and DVD drives but make sure the computer is completely off. This should make the drives work a little better.

You can always down grade to the latest 2.4.x kernel. Then wait until kernel version 2.6.x matures. Usually when the linux kernel has hit its teens or adulthood, it works the best.

People said that Mandrake 10 Official has a much stable 2.6.x kernel but I'm not 100% percent sure about that yet.
