DVD drive only recognized as CDROM

I have a toshiba DVD burner that is only being recognized as a CDROM drive. If I put a cdrom in it mounts automatically. But when I place a DVD in and try to mount it, it just says it is an unrecognized format. Also tried using mplayer to look at the dvd but it can't find any DVD drive on the system?

well i'd guess that maybe your fstab file is set to "iso9660" rather than a more normal "auto", but that's just a guess.... for mplayer, try somethign like...

mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdc -dvd 1

if your dvd drive is on secondary master.
